The Opposition takes this debate. A thoroughly good debate. Both teams were dynamic with their argumentations and substantiation. The Proposition team’s arguments were outlined clearly at the beginning of the debate, however as the debate progressed they were unable to defend their initial arguments.

The Proposition’s notion was that the responsibility to protect should be made a contention to put pressure on Syria by NATO and the UN SC, this to the extent of military intervention. The opposition questioned the feasibility and legitimacy of NATO intervening in the sovereignty of a country, especially since such actions would be vetoed by Russia and China due to their interests in Syria i.e Tartus, Naval Base etc. This being counter beneficial and might do more harm in the overall relations between countries in the region and that of internal stability. The idea of sovereignty and setting precedents was an interesting contention brought forth by the opposition.

Furthermore, the Proposition managed to highlight the responsibility of UN and that of NATO in protecting civilian lives subjected to oppressive killings. Both teams illustrated this example to their advantage. However the contention put forth by the opposition is that greater harms and collateral damage will come forth with a military intervention. Inadvertently unlike Libya which had internal rebels and support working from within; attacks carried out in non-urban areas, the geo-politics and internal dynamics of Syria makes it susceptible to break into civil war.

The oppositions contended that there are other possibilities that have yet to be exhausted in the status quo ie. embargoes, diplomatic negotiations etc. Those of which will entail better results if lead by the UN, which is a body backed by global support.

In conclusion the side of the opposition managed to clearly illustrate the fact that the idea put forth by the proposition though noble could create multitude levels of harms for Syria in the long run, thus not benefiting the very people they aim to protect.

반대 팀이 이 토론을 가져갔다. 전반적으로 좋은 토론이었다. 양 팀 모두 주장 전개와 증거 제시를 위해 효과적이고도 열정적으로 작업을 했었다. 찬성 팀의 주장들은 토론 도입부에 굉장히 구체적으로 그 윤곽이 드러났지만, 토론이 진행되면서 찬성 팀이 그들이 원래 제시했던 주장을 지키는 게 불가능해졌다.

찬성 팀 얘기는 나토와 유엔 안보리가 군사적인 개입까지 포함하여 시리아에 압력을 넣을 책임이 있다는 것이었다. 반대 팀은 국가 주권을 들어 찬성 팀 방안의 실효성과 합법성에 의문을 제기했는데, 특히 타르투 해군 기지와 같이 시리아에 이해가 있는 러시아와 중국이 거부권을 행사하는 상황을 강조했다. 이는 결국 해당 지역 국가들 간의 전반적인 관계와 역내 안정에 도움이 되지 않을 뿐 아니라 손해가 더 크다는 것이다. 국가 주권과 법적 결정에 관련된 흥미로운 아이디어는 반대 팀이 전면에 내세운 것이었다.

게다가, 찬성 팀은 폭압적인 학살로 희생되는 시민들의 생명을 지켜야 할 유엔과 나토의 책임을 강조하는 데 성공했다. 양 팀 모두 이 사례를 자신들의 강점으로 잘 어필했다. 하지만 반대 팀이 군사적 개입이 가져다 줄 보다 큰 해악과 부수적인 피해를 논쟁 전면에 내세웠다. 내부 반란이 있었고 무조전적인 지원이 뒤따랐던 리비아의 경우와는 다르다; 도시가 아닌 지역에 가해지는 공격들은, 시리아의 정치 지리적 여건이나 내부적인 유동성 때문에 내전으로 발전할 가능성도 있다.

반대 팀은 엠바고나 외교적인 협상 등 현 시점에서 아직 이뤄지지 않은 다른 가능성들도 언급했다. 이런 조치들이 전 지구적 차원의 지지를 받는 UN에서 행해질 때 보다 나은 결과를 가져오리라는 것이었다.

결론적으로 반대 팀이 찬성 측 방안이 고상해 보이지만 장기적인 관점에서 볼 때 시리아에 여러 수준에서 해를 끼칠 것이고, 그들이 보호하고자 하는 바로 그 시민들에게 도움이 되지 못한다는 점을 보여줬다.
