Adjudication

This is an issue that is, obviously, of immediate concern and Prop is right to flag that up in their introduction. However, to cede as much ground as they do undermines their own case by reminding the observer of the weaknesses of their own arguments. Essentially their definition suggests “Well it's never worked before but this time is different”. That is, of course a legitimate argument but one that that needs to be proved and sets a very high burden of proof. This was a burden that prop failed to meet.

Generally speaking, Opposition had a better use of evidence and a clearer understanding that assertion is one thing but argument is another. Proposition needed to demonstrate a clear link between deregulation and tax cuts and the possibilities for stimulating growth. As is frequently the case in this debate, prop relied on the assumption that regulation represents 'the cold, dead hand of bureaucracy', which is a fair point but needs proof (government spending also stimulates M1).

This as a tough motion for proposition but it's important not to give the shop away from the first moment: In terms of definition they state that this is a solution is specific to this particular crisis, that needs to be proved. It wasn't.

I have read the WOLC Grand Final submissions by Team South Korea (Proposition) and Team Canada (Opposition) on the motion "DEREGULATION AND TAX CUTS SHOULD BE EMBRACED TO LEAD THE WORLD OUT OF ECONOMIC CRISIS."

It is clear to me that Team Canada did a better job of opposing the motion.

I award the debate to Team Canada.

Adjudication by Neill Harvey-Smith: Canada, the opposition, were narrow winners of this debate. Both sides concentrated too much time on pointing out technical mistakes they believed their opponents had made. Judging should be left to the adjudicators. The debate was also littered from the start with technical debater language like 'substantives' which made it very difficult to read with enjoyment. As ever, the debate was won and lost not there, but in the quality of the interaction between the two sides. The Canadian teams critique of the behaviour of corporations was made consistently and with evidence. The Korean team did try to demonstrate the causality between tax cuts, deregulation and stimulus, but their arguments were less vivified by practical examples of how the policy would affect real people. Congratulations to both teams for achieving so much in the competition.

찬성측은 토론의 핵심 이슈였던 ‘즉각적인 영향’을 서두에 언급할 권리가 있었다. 하지만, 찬성 측 주장을 깎아내릴 정도로 너무 많은 영역을 상대에게 양보해 버렸기 때문에 관찰하는 입장에서는 찬성 측 주장의 약점들이 부각되어 보였다. 찬성 측의 정의는 ‘과거에는 안 통했지만 지금은 다르다’는 점을 제시했다. 이는 물론 합당한 주장이지만 증명이 필요했고, 그러기 위한 ‘증명의 부담’이 너무 심했다. 찬성측은 이번 토론에서 이 ‘증명의 부담’을 해결하는 데 실패했다.
