This was a difficult debate to adjudicate. The main reason why is because both sides are writing for the ear instead of the eye. This format requires adaptation for someone who is not only going to read the debate, but also has access to most of human knowledge. Write with this in mind in the next round, and make sure to use some links for your claims. It takes the adjudicator or reader no time to click through a few examples of what you mean, which bolster your arguments with ethos. As the samurai said, "To die with a weapon undrawn is to die a dog's death." Use what you have to make your case as strong as possible!

Although the Government team is severely lacking in the specifics of a model, and offers the unpersuasive example of "multicultural breeding" they do have good points about the advantages of a multicultural society. The question of whether or not a government policy can achieve that is weak, as well as when and how the government should intervene when it notices the development (or changes) to a homogeneous society. I was very surprised to find no mention of Norway in the government's case, nor any example of a specific policy that could be used for leverage to prove that governmental multicultural policies achieve these good results they discuss. The genetic example is too flawed: Government members should read about the differences between culture and biology, and why it might be bad strategy to conflate them.

Opposition is also in a thorny situation. They begin well with the suggestion of a robust defense of the status quo, where immigrants form "enclaves" (for lack of a better term) and protect one another. Unfortunately, that really promising principle is forgotten right after the introduction. I think it would have made the debate much clearer for Opposition to articulate what life is like for immigrants in a country where the government stays out of cross-cultural promotion, and the dangers of the government forcing interaction (something that the loose model of the Government could be made to suggest) on these people and their families. The example of "cultural relativism" was as poor as the genetic diversity argument of the Government; I wonder if you would have been better served to argue that governments would absolutely not promote "foul" cultural acts at all, thus furthering the alienation of the people who are suspected of being of a culture that practices them. I think the biggest mistake of the Opposition though was a very unclear line of attack when the model was so weak. What you ended up doing, it seemed, was attacking the Status Quo, which I expected you to defend after your very nice opening.

In deciding this debate, I found the style and the overtones of the Government team quite nice, but I am uncertain as to what they are promoting or defending. I think the Opposition has it right that in many countries that have multicultural programs or policies, there is violence and social unrest. I think the question as to what sorts of practices would be promoted is unanswered by the Government, although it would be easy for them to turn those arguments to their side to establish need for government intervention on this issue. I believe that Opposition is persuasive when they say that the "on the ground" realities of a multicultural policy will create more conflict and ultimately be counter productive.

It is a nice idea from Government side to have more multicultural programs, but in general, without much relief to the discursive terrain about multiculturalism, I am persuaded that the policy may not work, and may lead to tacit agreement with reprehensible cultural practices in particular countries. Opposition has not closed the door here, so to speak, on what might result, but I do think the government intervention might cause more problems than what it might speculatively, or questionably, solve.

My vote is for the Opposition in this very unclear debate.
