I award this debate to the Opposition team by a close but clear margin.

I felt that while the Prop team deserve praise for the interesting arguments they brought to the debate, they also had some strategic problems. First and foremost, several of their arguments were not so much reasons to legalise polygamy as advantages of living in relationships with multiple partners more generally as the Opp pointed out. Since, in most countries at least, there is nothing to stop a man living with several partners (or vice versa), quite a lot of this argumentation seemed superfluous.

Even if we disregard that issue, however, it seemed to this judge that there were problems with the Prop’s case. They raised the possibility that this would improve race relations without really proving how; similarly, the assertion that it would lead to a more prosperous family seemed to presuppose that all or most of the wives (or husbands) would be bringing in an income, which in many countries in the status quo is either not the case or only partly true. And is it really correct that we should overturn two thousand years of tradition in order to save on the number of refrigerators in a household, or its carbon footprint? This seemed quite a trivial argument.

The Proposition team were stronger when they were talking about individual rights and freedom, which is closer to the core of this debate; since people are generally free to live in (unrecognised) polygamous relationships already, what is the value and meaning of allowing or forbidding it in law, and what benefits or harms would come from allowing the state to recognise polygamy? Neither team explored this quite as fully as I would have liked, but the Opposition did address this point in their first argument on impacts, and did so quite well.

Otherwise, Opposition did a good job of engaging with the other parts of the Prop case, and their rebuttals were generally strong, detailed and backed up with evidence, which was a positive. I was unpersuaded by your argument about destroying immigration policies, which I thought the Prop were justified in dismissing fairly briefly; but your point about the reality of the situation as it is actually existing in polygamous relationships, was another very strong one, which the Prop did not significantly damage. Together with your central argument about impact of official recognition for polygamous marriage, these persuaded me to award the debate to your team.
