Motion : GOVERNMENTS SHOULD FUND ARTS AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES THAT ACTIVELY PROMOTE INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES AND CULTURES

This debate suffered a little from the start through confusion between the two sides over exactly what was being discussed. However, Proposition had made some effort to define and that should have been the end of the issue. It was disappointing that so little attention was paid to the preservation of language with both side only really devoting one argument to it when, in many ways, it is the heart of this issue.

Opposition's rebuttal was okay but their own arguments suffered from what's termed willful misunderstanding. Clearly nobody was suggesting revoking laws on murder or human trafficking and such an interpretation moved their argument away from the real areas of clash. Again this could have been avoided had more attention been paid to the issue of language.

Overall there was some good use of factual knowledge and some interesting argumentation. On a point of style, I should note that in a closer debate the use of what is termed ad hominem comments (attacking the individual rather than the idea). This is absolutely against the rules and should be avoided.

Op's strongest argument was that if governments are going too spend money on indigenous peoples it should be on healthcare and education (although prop responded to this well). This argument should have come out from the start and not have been squeezed into the conclusion. Both sides would benefit from a more considered weighting of their arguments start with the strongest.

이번 토론은 시작부터 양 팀이 정확히 무엇을 놓고 토론하는 지 약간 불분명해서 이해하기가 좀 힘들었다. 하지만, 찬성 팀이 이번 이슈가 부각된 목적에 관해서 정의하고자 하는 노력이 어느 정도 있었다. 이슈의 핵심이라고 할 수 있었던 언어의 보존에 대해서 양 팀 모두 거의 관심을 기울이지 않았고 겨우 1개의 주장 정도만이 연관되어 있었다는 데 대해 실망했다.

반대 팀의 반박은 괜찮았지만 그들 자신의 주장은 오해를 부를 소지가 다분했다. 분명히 누구도 살인이나 인신매매에 관련된 법을 폐지하자고 주장한 적이 없고, 그런 해석은 그들의 주장을 토론의 쟁점으로부터 멀어지게 만들었다. 다시 말해서 언어에 관련된 사안에 조금만 주의를 더 기울였어도 피할 수 있는 문제였다.

전반적으로 사실적 지식을 잘 이용한 사례가 조금 보이고 몇몇 흥미로운 주장들도 제시되었다. 내용 전달 방식의 경우, 이번 토론이 인신 공격성 발언들(주장이 아닌 개인을 공격하는 것)로 얼룩진 것을 발견했다. 이는 변명의 여지가 없는 규칙 위반이며 다시는 이런 일이 발생해서는 안 된다.
