Motion : UNASUR SHOULD CREATE A SINGLE CURRENCY

Defending: Colombia, Opposing: Venezuela

All the Yes points

1. A single currency will help South America to have a complete integration.

2. A single currency brings interdependency between the countries that contributes to peace in the continent.

3. A single currency contributes to social and cultural integration that contributes to peace in the region.

All the No points

1. A Single currency defeats the purpose of fiscal responsability

2. A single currency doesn't satisfy every country's need: loss of flexibility.

3. UNASUR is not accountable to the people:

4. All the countries in the same basket is very dangerous for all citizents

5. A single currency to integration is like twigs to a house: you could build walls for a house with them, but its not the only or the best way.

Columbia v Venezuela

The Opposition takes this debate. The Proposition team’s arguments were outlined clearly at the beginning of the debate, however as the debate progressed they were unable to defend their initial arguments.

The Proposition’s notion was that a single currency would be better for UNASUR to further enhance integration and that of interdependency on a few levels. This was clearly rebutted and further analyzed by the Opposition, whereby existing treaties were already in place to attend to the issues of unity and integration which both sides agreed is important.

Furthermore, the Proposition also had insufficient parallel examples and proof that South American countries are capable or have the capacity to execute and implement a single currency. This was primarily the notion set forth by the side of the Opposition. Which illustrates the fact that pushing for a single currency will only bring about more harm and risks then the South American countries can afford.

The opposition also successfully supplemented the fact that in the European Union the single currency is failing, that which is likely to happen in South America considering the economic and political climate of these nations.

The idea of fiscal responsibilities was an interesting notion brought forth in the debate by both sides. The proposition also had some interesting contentions with the idea of stronger nations taking on a role that can help existing weaker nations. This I felt could have been further analyzed with more examples.

On the issue of accountability, it was further highlighted that administering a single currency would be unjust to many member countries as there was still a vague assumption on who would end up administering the currency, also the abuse that might come about from key players with national interest and that of efficiency.

In conclusion the side of the opposition managed to clearly illustrate the fact that the idea put forth by the proposition though noble could create multitude levels of harms for the South American nations, considering the distinct differences economically, socially and politically.

반대 팀이 이번 토론을 가져갔다. 찬성 팀 주장의 밑그림이 토론 도입부에 깨끗하게 그려졌지만, 토론이 진행될수록 그들의 원래 주장을 고수하기가 점점 더 어려워졌다.

찬성 팀의 입장은 단일 통화가 남미 연합 가맹국들의 통합과 의존성 증대에 여러 모로 보다 도움이 된다는 것이다. 양 팀 모두 통합과 교류에 관하여 조약들이 현존하고 있다고 동의했고, 그것에 기초해서 반대 팀이 찬성 측 주장을 제대로 반박하고 보다 심화된 분석을 해 냈다.

게다가, 찬성 팀은 남미 대륙의 국가들이 단일 통화를 관철시킬 능력이 있다는 데 대해 불충분한 일련의 사례들과 증거들을 제시했다. 여기에 대응하여 반대 팀은 다음과 같이 중요한 얘기를 꺼냈다. 그러니까 단일 화폐를 관철시키려는 시도는 오로지 보다 많은 피해와 부담만 남미 국가들에게 안겨줄 수 있다는 것이다.

반대 팀은 유럽 연합이 도입하고 있는 단일 통화가 대표적인 실패 사례라는 점을 성공적으로 언급하면서, 남미 국가들의 정치·경제적 상황을 고려할 때 단일 통화를 남미 연합에 도입하려는 시도가 마찬가지로 실패할 것이라는 점을 보여주었다.

결론을 말하자면 찬성 팀이 제시했던 입장이 비록 숭고하기는 하지만 반대 팀이 경제적, 사회적, 정치적인 차이를 고려하면서 찬성 팀의 입장이 남미 국가들에게 끼치는 다층의 영향을 잘 그려내었다.

전반적으로 좋은 토론이었다.
