Motion : POORER COUNTRIES SHOULD ABANDON FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS

Defending: Indonesia, Opposing: Mexico

I have awarded this debate to the Opposition: Mexico. My reasons follow: Firstly, the debate was excessively long and focussed (not always beneficially,) on a trade-off of examples. This 'shopping-list' of examples on both sides tended to characterise a debate on the relative merits of Free Trade, per se, and less on why poorer countries should abandon such agreements. In this respect, I felt that both teams were engaging in a debate that they wanted to occur, rather than the debate required under the terms of the motion. Secondly, the examples themselves were often poorly quoted and asserted, rather than built into some cogent reasoning and well-directed argumentation. (I was somewhat taken aback, for instance, at the MU/Malaysian football team/badminton exchange, shortly followed by an analysis of the potential depreciation of the durian! relevance; value?). Overall, not a debate with any particular structure or direction. Having bogged down in the Free Trade analysis, neither side really managed to develop any real sense of progressive argumentation from that point on.

I have awarded this debate to Opposition (Mexico).

This debate was far, far too long. At 13,000 words it was the equivalent of a Masters thesis and took an hour to read, let alone judge. In future, both teams should recognise that debating is about precision and concise persuasion. It is not and should not be about who can find the most examples or statistics. Rather, debating is about finding the most important statistic or example and explaining how this fits your principled stance.

For me, the deciding factor in why Mexico won (aside from the fact that they wrote 700 words less and I found Indonesia's simulated anger at one Spanish citation rather off-putting) is a failure on the part of Proposition to link lists of facts with principled reasons for why those facts were caused by free-trade agreements. This meant that as a reader, I often could not correlate what Indonesia were citing as economic facts with their case. Whilst Mexico had some problems with citation (including getting the 92.5% figure completely wrong!), I felt they had a better grasp of how free-trade might help a poor country (which Indonesia were forced to cede later in the debate when they turned to a cost-benefit approach). Their analysis of Mexico, Chile and Ghana in particular was well-reasoned and showed a stronger understanding of correlation and causality.

In short, this debate was a mess. In life, as in debating, we need to learn to be succinct. This is harder than you think. I hope that the victor of this debate takes this lesson into the next round. Otherwise, I fear for the sanity of your future judges.

이번 토론은, 정말이지, 너무나 길었다. 13,000 단어는 석사 논문에 해당하는 분량이었고 읽는데 족히 1시간은 걸렸으며, 심판 혼자 방치해놓았다는 느낌이 들게 했다. 앞으로는, 양 팀 모두 토론이 정밀하고 간결한 설득이라는 점을 인식해야만 한다. 토론은 누가 가장 많은 사례와 통계를 찾을 수 있는가도 아니고 그래서도 안 된다. 대신에, 토론은 가장 중요한 통계 또는 사례를 찾고 어떻게 그것을 자신의 원론적 입장에 맞추어나갈 것인가에 대한 것이다.
