Win : Team Colombia

I think that the point of this debate was for Romania to show exactly why remotely controlled weapons systems were unique as compared to other technologies used in warfare and therefore warranted a banning. The vast majority of their argumentation though, as Opposition side was able to point out did not make any delineation between this particular type versus other examples that were brought up and considered "legitimate" in war. I would have appreciated opposition using more up to date examples to prove this than say, assassin groups from the "ancient times," but their point was made in the end, albeit in a shallow manner.

In terms of Propositions positive matter I felt that A) They made very weak attempts to prove why exactly remote weapons system would lead to their claimed outcomes and B) Why those outcomes were again so unique to this type of technology. The idea that it would make people evil was rooted in rather vague philosophical musings, more to do with a generic sense of taking of life than anything about this debate in particular. There was no reason for why this would disproportionately bring women into the fray, and if it did why they are less desirable than men as soldiers. Lastly, the accuracy point just states problems with this system without showing why those are more predominant to other possibilities. Without this point proven, the supplementary arbitrary executions point about dictators etc, has no basis.

Lastly the rebuttal done by the opposition side was more effective in pointing out a failure of proposition to fulfill their burden of proof. The Romanian team's rebuttal, when it was attempted, seemed to misunderstand the point across from it and therefore not address it.

Both teams would have benefitted massively from some editing of their arguments. Beyond just a grammatical sense, the clarity in direction was severely lacking. In a written debate especially, there is time to proofread and more carefully put together your ideas in a coherent way. Remember that the judges do not know what you are thinking, and what might make sense to you when you reread it, doesn't necessarily translate for them. Maybe having a team member that was not directly involved in coming up with the specific point or coming back and editing it a few hours after writing it could help with this.

First prop case on “playing like god” is quite weak. Much of it is based on asserted rules of war and some harm done to women controlling the weapons. The second prop case is not much better centered on a concept that the remote aspect will lead to more arbitrary executions by women with no background in humanitarian law. Point 3 was a bit disjointed and again too heavy in assertion that the new technology would transform the whole population into evil combatants and that an increasing reluctance to sign up for combat should be used as an opportunity to pursue diplomacy rather than war. To be honest each of these first three arguments can only be considered very weak, poorly researched and were easily rebutted by the opposition. The fourth point on the accuracy of the weapons had potential to be a strong case but really was not made well enough to counter balance the weakness of the earlier arguments. The remainder of their case was attempting to counteract some of the rebuttal by the opposition but still remained weak and full of assertions. On the opposition side their first point on putting less people in danger was potentially a strong one but was only briefly made. Perhaps they expected that the research link would back up their argument but that assumption is flawed as key principle in debating is that YOU need to make the argument and you can’t expect the judges to give more than a brief glance at the research material. The second point on the evolution of technology was interesting. Their arguments on better trained military forces and more tactical combat didn’t really feel convincing but the proposition made no attempt to rebut them. On balance this was not a good debate. There were nuggets of good arguments at times but these were poorly developed and too reliant on assertion rather than research. Most development went into arguments that were unconvincing. Distinguishing the two sides on argument and content was not easy as both were weak. However in terms of engagement the rebuttal by the opposition was far better and significantly undermined the proposition case. The proposition were not as effective in this area. Therefore my vote goes to the opposition ? Columbia. However to progress in future rounds they need to be very clear on their arguments. Think about what are the key issues in question in the debate and what their position needs to be on these. They should continue to rebut the other side. They also need to be careful to make sure that they reflect their research in their case. As I mentioned earlier you need to make the case (especially if the d_ocument is not in English)
