An actress, who will feature in a Korean film scheduled to open next month, has drawn media attention because she has changed her gender. Lee Sea-youn, 28, who previously went under the name of Lee Dae-hak, will appear in the sequel to ``Sex Is Zero'' to be released nationwide on Dec. 13. Reportedly, Lee underwent a sex change operation earlier this year. The actress is still legally registered as a male.

She has not made any contact with anyone since her sex change became known to the public Friday, ``I am still afraid of showing up before the audience, who may see me with a biased view,'' a movie official delivered Lee's message on her behalf. The movie production, a sequel to ``Sex Is Zero,'' also faced barriers in promoting the film because many media outlets here have given more weight to the transsexual entertainer rather than the new comic movie.

``With Lee's experience being treated merely as an eye-catching story, we are extremely cautious about handling the issue for fear that she may be affected negatively by what people and the media say,'' said the official. ``We hope Lee will show up in the near future and explain her opinion on the issue.''

Communities Divided on Sexual Politics

Stories about men loving men and women loving women are nothing new. Homosexuals have existed throughout history and so has hatred for it. Up until now, gay people, who should be happy as the name implies, are not always happy. Gay rights group's state that one out of every hundred people may be homosexual but merely one percent of them acknowledge their sexuality because they sometimes face social discrimination.

In a lesbian's case, it's worse. A counselor at the Lesbian Counseling Center in South Korea said lesbians have a double bias on them _ being homosexual and being a woman. ``Therefore, we are more than careful when talking to the media than a non-homosexuals' approach. Our institution is in touch with dozens of lesbian communities but we are always cautious of possible leaks of private information or speaking out too loud,'' she explained when asked why they do not hold public events to draw public attention to their rights.

These days, it is the mass media that bring the so-called ``homos'' much closer to the public. Box office mega hit ``The King and Clown,'' ``Road Movie,'' ``No Regret 2006,'' and small screen hit ``Coffee Prince'' and ``Jumong'' portrayed some aspects of gays in Korea. They had trouble with their identities at first, but accepted it and paved their own way through it.
