Oct. 10 is World Mental Health Day. The World Federation of Mental Health is commemorating the day with the slogan "Building Awareness -- Reducing Risk: Mental Illness and Suicide." The day is important mainly because mental well-being is usually overlooked. It may be because most people are not aware that for sound health, both body and mind should be in perfect balance. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health is the state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. Mental illness is related to psychological disorder. The commonly understood notion of mental illness is that it is a severe disorder like that of insane people, but everyone in one way or another may suffer from mental illness. It sometimes happens that people may not be aware of the mental illness that they are suffering from.
The milder disorders like anxiety, depression and phobias are categorized as neurosis. Neurosis is a milder psychological disorder caused by emotional stress, conflicts, and frustrations which make a person partly incapable of coping with life.
With the hectic life schedule of the 21st century people have become prone to psychological problems. When unable to cope effectively with the daily problems of life, they are easily victimized by the disorders like depression and anxiety problems. According to the World Health Organization 25 percent of individuals develop one or more mental or behavioral disorders at some stage in life, in both developed and developing countries.
Having an inappropriate attitude, an insatiable demand for approval, an inferiority complex, or an unusual critical attitude may all be the symptom of mental disorder.
In these cases, most of us are not aware of what we are going through. Mental health problems sometimes take the form of physical illness like a continuous headache, aches in other areas of the body, fatigue, nausea etc. Depression has emerged as one of the major mental health problems. Depression may result from adverse living condition, not been able to fulfill one's desire, unemployment and several other reasons. According to WHO an estimated 121 million people currently suffer from depression all over the world. Another severe form of mental disorder is psychosis. It is an extreme disorganization of the personality and involves a complete loss of contact with reality. The behavior of sufferers is bizarre because they experience delusions and hallucinations.
According to the psychologists the cause of each kind of mental abnormality may be psychological as well social. The psychological causes include stress in daily life, broken family, low frustration tolerance ability, poor ego-strength to cope with the realities of life and so on. The social causes like poverty, high social discrimination and poor social support can also result in mental disorders. The reports even show that people living under violence and war are mentally disturbed and can develop traumas, anxiety and depression. Mental abnormality not only hinders day to day life but it may also lead to suicide. Because of the increase in the mental illness the suicide rate is increasing in the world day by day. The WHO report shows that 873,000 people die every year by suicide. Out of all the suicides, 60 percent result from depression as it remains one of the common and often unavoidable outcomes of this illness. The milder disturbances can be easily treated with psychological counseling but they sometimes need the assistance of drugs. A person with a severe mental disorder needs to be hospitalized and the hospital team provides him/her with support. Those patients even need drug and behavioral therapy. Generally the milder disorders are neither diagnosed nor treated. It is mainly because people do not consider mental abnormality as a disease. Most people are not even aware of having mental problems due to the lack of information and knowledge about mental illness.
Thus people should be made aware of mental health so that they may implement the precautions in the day to day life. They should be educated and informed to bridge the common gap between mental and physical health. The awareness campaign should be mainly carried out in developing countries because mental health is a completely new issue and topic for the people there.
