College cheating

Cheating in school isn't what it used to be. Like everything else, it's gone hi-tech and is now easier than ever before. Today's college cheating involves plagiarism, and the students who are doing it are called "patchwork plagiarists". They just go to pages on the Internet, select a patch of text (typed words) and then paste it into their own word processors, just as though they had written it themselves.
This is not a small problem. Some experts estimate that approximately 36% of all college students in the USA are now using this method of cheating to get through school.
In the old days students who wanted to cheat on a book report or a research paper had to go to the library, search in books for the information they needed, copy it by hand, then return home to retype it into their finished reports. It was a time consuming procedure, although in the 1980s copy machines made it a little easier.
But today it is extremely simple with no retyping necessary. Students with Internet connections (which is just about everybody) can do the whole thing in a fraction of the time without even having to go to the library. All they have to do is to search the Internet for the information they want, select, copy and paste into their word processors, then print. Using this method, a student can throw together in less than an hour a long research paper that years ago would have taken days.
Needless to say, college instructors and professors aren't sitting by doing nothing about the problem. They're fighting back with their own set of weapons.
Teachers say that it's usually easy to spot a plagiarized paper. The typical paper begins with an opening section written in poor English, followed by a long section of grammatically perfect writing, only to be then followed by a conclusion that is once again written in bad English.
Many professors are cutting back on the cheating by requiring students to turn in outlines, followed by rough drafts, then the finished papers. This forces students to do the projects in steps, making it impossible to cheat.
There are also computer programs now which can detect the difference between writing styles in the same paper. These programs can tell if different parts of a paper were written by different people.
Finally, an Internet service is now available to professors who want to have a whole paper checked online. The web-based program checks all the research papers on the Internet for exact word-for-word passages.
