Weapons of Mass Destruction
페이지 정보

본문
*Nuclear Weapons.
It is the most destructive force that mankind has ever invented. It is the power to destroy millions of people in a few seconds. It has the potential to change life on this planet as we know it. It's the power built into a nuclear weapon, also known as the hydrogen bomb.
Nuclear weapons were the byproduct of World War Ⅱ, in particular, the war between the western allies and Japan. For decades the Japanese had been raping and pillaging their Asian neighbors. Millions had been slaughtered by the Japanese military, over 25 million Chinese alone were killed. Two hydrogen bombs were dropped on the Japanese to force them onto surrender.
The strategy worked, but it also resulted in a nuclear buildup between East and West that became known as the Cold War. Communist in the Soviet Union were impressed by the incredible power of these new weapons of mass destruction and decided they needed the same things to defend themselves from the West.
The more bombs the Soviet built, the more the Americans built. It turned into a huge arms race. Both sides stockpiled enough power to annihilate the other several times over.
The Cold War ended in 1989 with the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the Americans and Russians started working on dismantling the bombs.
While they are getting rid of them, other countries are trying to build them. Traditional enemies India and Pakistan, and North Korea have all succeeded in building nuclear bombs while Iran is trying. The Pakistanis danced in the streets when their government announced they had built the bomb.
*Biological weapons.
Nuclear bombs are not the only weapons of terror in the world today. Terrorist organizations such as the Islamic extremist are working hard to make biological weapons the weapons of choice in the 21st century. Millions of people could be killed very quickly by the release of a poisonous gas into the air or by the contamination of a large city's water supply.
Gases and chemicals are not always easily detectable. Many of them are odorless and tasteless, so millions could die before anyone would ever know what was happening.
Why would anybody want to kill millions of innocent men, women, and children by poisoning their water supply or releasing a poisonous gas into the air? It is hard to imagine that there are people who would take pleasure from doing such a cruel thing, but there are.
These people are usually motivated by racial or religious hatred. Half a century after Hitler's Nazis killed 6 million Jews with poison gas, there are still people today bent on doing the same thing to the people they hate.
Q1) Nuclear weapons cause radioactive fallout that can kill even those who drop them. Since these weapons are so dangerous, why do countries want to have them? Tell why you think so.
Q2) What should be done about countries that are suspected to be developing weapons of mass destruction?
Q3) North Korea's Kin Jung Il claims that his country needs nuclear weapons for self-defense. And the six-way talks -involve South Korea, China, Russia, and Japan, as well as the United States and North Korea- may restart in mid-December, 2003, to resolve the nuclear crisis in East Asia. What do you think of that?
Q4) Will it ever be possible to get rid of all the nuclear and biological weapons from the earth? Will the earth ever be a completely safe place to live? Why or why not?
