Choosing a Mate
페이지 정보

본문
In 1989 a study was conducted by a psychology professor at the University of Michigan to find out if there were any differences in mating preferences among the different cultures around the world.
It was found that women of every nationality think almost identically concerning the type of husbands they look for. And although men have different preferences from women, they also think exactly the same.
10,000 people in 33 countries on all continents around the world took part in the study. Each person was asked to consider 31 different characteristics which they might look for in a husband or wife. They were asked to rank the personal characteristics from which was the most important to them to which was the least important.
As was expected, males everywhere look for attractiveness and youthfulness in wives while women want husbands who are older and who will be good providers.
There was almost no difference in the responses they received from men and women in every culture, whether it was the Zulus(of Africa), the Brazilians, or the Chinese.
The reason, researchers think, is reproduction. These could be results of the problems
that males and females have to solve in order to reproduce and survive.
A woman will usually look for a prosperous man because he is better able to support a family, whereas a man will look for a woman whose age and appearance are a sign of fertility.
Although there are a few differences, men in many countries are more concerned than women that their partners be virgins when they get married. The Chinese, and most other Asians, think that a girl who loses her virginity is dirty and impure.
The historical reason could be that if the female is not a virgin, there is always the chance that the man could be marrying a woman who is already pregnant with another man's child.
The 1980s and 1990s have seen some changes occur in marriage patterns. In developing countries, better educational opportunities are causing women to get married later. In advanced countries women's liberation movements have created more social freedoms and better career opportunities for women. As a result, many women are choosing to remain single.
This trend is so prevalent in Japan that many Japanese men are having to import wives in order to get married.
