Reasons

In this debate both sides struggled to develop substantive matter, but rebutted well. It was a close debate because the same problems affected the arguments of both teams: logic and relevance issues and the organisation and prioritisation of key points.

These problems were of more significance for the Government as they struggled to demonstrate the harm caused by these symbols. That is the main reason they lost the debate.

The Government should’ve led more strongly. The definition was not sufficient, and should have included the issues covered in points two and three. This would have allowed the Government to lead with the harm arguments. When they addressed harm at point four, they could have separated the contentions and developed each as points. The Government also made a critical, but unsupported, statement at the close of the argument that “by banning Nazi and Soviet symbols we can prevent these violent acts.”

Point five (hate speech) lacked relevance with no clear link to symbols yet it was one of two main harm arguments. Aspects of the Summary also lacked relevance.

The Opposition delivered clear responses in rebuttal (for example, the notion that prohibition would encourage problems).

However, in substantive matter the Opposition also had problems with organisation and prioritisation. Leading with an irrelevant point was not good. The Opposition’s second point actually contained two points (and was closely related to the fourth point, but interrupted by the third). The third point, the broader notion of freedom of speech probably should have led the case.

Within these arguments, the Opposition kept its arguments relatively simple and easy to follow. This was highlighted in a strong Summary, which was logical, relevant, clear and structured.

The Government was at its strongest in rebuttal. Its relaxed manner and clear structure demonstrated weaknesses in Opposition argumentation.

Win goes to the Opposition.

First off, like Ray, I thought it was evident that both teams were clearly stronger in rebuttal than in their main argumentation. I would highlight that as an issue that both teams should look at. While rebuttal is important, substantive matter forms the backbone of any debate, and it could hinder both of you in the future against more rounded teams.

Opp won because they did a better job of deconstructing the arguments of the proposition and because they won on the crucial ground of the role of symbols; the taboo effect, the importance to social discourse, their multiple meanings. In contrast, I think Prop had a hard time nailing down harm, resorting largely to more general offence arguments.

On more tactical issues, things I would point out:

I believe Prop made a large mistake in rebutting the point marked ‘It would cause racial dissension’ by focusing almost exclusively on the international effects, only referring to the racial dissension element as an almost aside at the end, and not effectively.

Please don’t make general statements without backing them up; like ‘most people do not regard these symbols as particularly offensive here in the Baltic States’. If it’s true, you need to give me arguments.

이 문제들은 찬성 팀이 이러한 상징물들이 끼치는 손해에 대해 강조하고자 했을 때 보다 두드러졌다. 그것 때문에 찬성 팀이 토론에서 졌다.

찬성 팀은 토론을 좀 더 강하게 끌고 갔어야 했다. 용어 정의는 논점 2와 3을 포괄하는 사안들까지 포함했어야 했지만 그 정도로 충분히 이뤄지지 않았다. 그랬다면 찬성 팀은 손해를 강조하는 주장들로 토론을 주도할 수도 있었다. 그들이 논점 4에서 손해를 언급할 때, 그들은 주장을 분리해서 각각을 독립된 주장으로 전개할 수도 있었다. 찬성 팀은 또한 ‘나치와 소련의 상징물을 금지하면 그들의 폭력 행위를 막을 수 있다.’는 주장을 마치면서 중요하지만 제대로 뒷받침되지 않은 언급을 했다.

논점 5(경멸적 발언)는 손해를 강조한 두 개의 주요한 주장 중 하나였지만 상징물과 분명한 연결고리도 없었고 연관성도 없었다. 요약문을 살펴봐도 역시 연관성이 부족했다.

우선은 Ray와 같이, 분명히 나도 양 팀 모두가 그들 자신의 주장보다는 반박에서 보다 강세를 보였다고 생각했다. 양 팀 모두 이 사안에 대해 주목해 줬으면 한다. 반박은 물론 중요하지만, 자기 팀의 고유한 내용물은 그 어떤 토론에서도 중추를 이루고, 앞으로 보다 상위의 팀들을 상대해야 할 때 지금 보여준 문제점들이 방해가 될 것이다.

반대 팀이 상징물의 역할에 대한 중요한 부분에서 이겨서 찬성 팀의 주장을 무너뜨리는 데 우세를 보였기에 승자 팀이 되었다. 상징물의 역할로는 금기시 효과, 사회적 담화의 중요성, 그리고 상징물의 여러 의미를 들 수 있다. 이와 대조적으로, 찬성 팀은 손해를 확증하는데 어려움을 겪었고, 모욕에 대한 보다 일반적인 주장만 했다.

보다 전술적인 문제들에 대해서도 지적할 점이 잇다.

난 찬성 팀이 ‘상징물들이 인종 간 불화를 일으킬 것이다.’ 라고 지적한 부분에서 반박하는 데 있어 큰 실수를 했다고 보는데, 국제적인 영향에만 특별히 집중하다시피 했고, 거의 마지막에서야 인종 간 알력의 요소를 언급했지만 효과적이지도 않았다.

뒷받침 내용 없이 일반적인 주장을 꺼내지 마라. 예를 들어 ‘발트 해 연안 국가 사람들 대부분은 이런 상징물들을 특별히 모욕이라고 느끼지 않는다.’와 같은 것이다. 만약 이게 사실이면, 주장을 제시해 줘라.
